Your first two weeks in Porto
You do not need to finish Portugal in one day. You need a few papers that unlock the rest: a Portuguese address you can prove, a NIF, a way to receive SMS, and somewhere safe to sleep without wiring a deposit to a stranger before you have seen the flat.
Day one to three
- Sleep somewhere you already paid for, even if it is short. Do not empty your savings into a WhatsApp “landlord”.
- Buy a Portuguese SIM with passport ID at a shop that prints a contract (Vodafone, MEO, NOS, or a reputable reseller). Keep the paper.
- Walk the block you might rent. Hills and night noise do not show on a map pin.
Papers that unlock the rest
Get or update your NIF. Open a bank account when you have ID, NIF and proof of address. Register for an SNS user number once you have a fixed address. If AIMA is in your story, read AIMA appointments before you pay anyone for a “slot”.
Home and money
For the first months, a room with a short notice period is often saner than a two-year lease you have not tested. Browse Housing on Teleporto, see the place, and pay when you have keys and a contract. Set up electricity, water and gas and fibre in your own name when the lease allows it.
Keep the PDFs
Scan every receipt, lease page and appointment confirmation into plain filenames. Portugal runs on the PDF you can find at 08:40 in a Loja do Cidadão queue.
