An electricity meter and a gas cylinder

Electricity, water and gas

Electricity in Portugal is a contract you can switch. EDP, Galp, Endesa, Goldenergy, Iberdrola and others sell it. What the new company needs is a NIF, a bank account for the direct debit, and the supply-point code, the CPE, printed on a bill or on the meter. If the landlord keeps the contract in their name, you pay them, and you should still see a bill. That belongs in the conversation in Before you sign a Porto rental.

Water is not national. In the city of Porto the municipal company is Águas e Energia do Porto. In Vila Nova de Gaia it is a different company. Do not open a Porto water contract for a flat across the bridge. The name is on the bill in the drawer, if the landlord still has one.

A lot of older flats do not have piped gas. They use a bottled cylinder, a botija, that you swap at a shop or have delivered. Ask which it is before you sign, because “gas included” can mean a cylinder in the kitchen. Heating is often a small electric unit or nothing. August hides that. January does not.
