Getting a NIF in Porto

Getting a NIF in Porto

A NIF is the Portuguese tax number. You need it before a work contract, a lease, or most bank accounts. Asking for one is free.

Since July 2025, people without a Portuguese citizen card use one of two routes. Book an in-person slot, or have a legal representative file the request on the Finanças e-balcão.

In Porto you do not pick a special counter. Any Finanças office or Loja do Cidadão works, once you have an appointment. Book it on the Finanças website under Contactos, Atendimento por marcação, or call (+351) 217 206 707 on weekdays from 9:00 to 19:00.

Take a valid passport. If your address is not printed in it, take a document that shows where you live. Non-residents are often asked to name a fiscal representative who already lives in Portugal. That is a different person from someone who simply walks in with you.

The number itself is issued at the appointment. What changes, and what this page will not guess, is which desk has a free slot this week.
