Who to call in an emergency in Porto

Save these numbers while you still have battery and calm. The wrong first call wastes the minutes that matter.

Life-threatening

Call 112. It is the European emergency number. Say the city, the street, and what you see. Speak slowly. English often works; a Portuguese sentence for the address still helps.

Health advice, not an ambulance yet

Call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24 for fever, a child who will not settle, medication questions, or “do I need the hospital tonight?”. They triage and tell you whether to stay home, go to a clinic, or head to urgências. Details sit in When you are ill in Porto.

Police and other desks

  • PSP in the city of Porto for urban crime and reports.
  • GNR outside some municipalities in the metro area.
  • Maritime and forest emergencies have dedicated lines published on gov.pt when those risks apply.

For a pharmacy open after hours, use the duty list rather than guessing shuttered doors. That habit is in The pharmacy open tonight.

What to keep on your phone

Your address in Portuguese, the building door code if you have one, allergies, and the name of any medicine you take daily. A screenshot of your SNS user number helps when a desk asks for it under stress.
