Matosinhos for a sea day and a flat

Matosinhos is the Atlantic neighbour north-west of Porto. Day-trippers come for the beach and the fish restaurants. Residents stay for slightly more space per euro than the historic centre, and for a sea walk that does not need a car.

Getting there

The yellow metro line reaches Matosinhos Sul and related stops. An Andante zapping or a monthly pass covers the ride if your zones match. From the airport the same network is useful; the airport-to-centre sketch is in From the airport to the centre by metro.

A day by the water

Walk the promenade, swim when the flags allow, and eat grilled fish on the streets behind the beach rather than the first terrace that waves a menu in English only. Sundays fill early in summer. Wind is part of the deal.

Living there

Flats near the beach cost more and hear more weekend noise. Inland streets feel like a normal Portuguese town with schools, municipal services and a supermarket run. Check flood and wind exposure on ground-floor units facing the sea. The rental checklist still applies: Before you sign a Porto rental.
