Getting a NISS so you can be hired

The NISS is the social security number. You need it to be hired, to pay contributions, and to claim most benefits. Asking for it is free.

If you do not have a Portuguese citizen card, the request is online. On seg-social.pt open Sou Cidadão, then the NISS form for foreign citizens, and attach a scan of your passport or residence card. A file under 5 MB, pdf or photo, is what the form asks for.

When an employer hires you, they can request the NISS for you and then register the contract. That is often faster than doing it alone.

If you already have a Portuguese address and you have asked for a residence permit, hold one, are an EU citizen, or have international protection, you can ask for the NIF, the NISS and the health-service number in one visit. gov.pt, updated in September 2026, says that combined desk is currently in 12 Espaços Cidadão.
