Where to eat in Porto without a tourist trap

Porto feeds you well if you walk two streets off the postcard. The trap is a laminated English menu facing the river with the same three grilled fish and a waiter who starts in English before you speak.

Choose a neighbourhood, not a landmark

Bonfim, Cedofeita, Paranhos and Matosinhos feed residents. Ribeira and Miragaia still have good rooms, but the first row of tables on the quay is priced for the cruise ship, not for you.

Read the menu like a local

A short daily list written in Portuguese, a price that matches the room, and a kitchen you can hear are better signals than a selfie wall. If every dish has a flag emoji, keep walking.

Time of day

Lunch fills earlier than northern Europe expects. Dinner kitchens often open around 19:00. A full room at 18:00 on a weekday can mean tourists; a full room at 21:00 usually means the food is why people came.

Browse Places on Teleporto for specific rooms, and ask the community when you want a tip for tonight.
