Paying with MB Way
Image: Teleporto.
MB Way is the payment people use for a coffee, a split dinner, or a second-hand bike. It belongs to SIBS and it is tied to a Portuguese bank account and a Portuguese mobile number. The product page is mbway.pt. Without a local account and a local number, you do not have it yet. The number is in the phone guide, and the account is in Opening a bank account.
In a shop you can pay by phone number, by a QR code, or by a contactless pass in the bank’s app. Between people, you send to a mobile number. The other person has to accept. A Multibanco reference, the entity and reference on a bill, is the other everyday rail. You can pay that at an ATM or in the same app.
Do not send MB Way for a sofa, a deposit on a flat, or a “reservation” to someone you have not met. Sending is instant and, in practice, hard to undo. Pay for an object while you are looking at it. For a rental, the warnings are in the rental guide.
